If I could only paint furniture one color for the rest of my life, it would be black. I love the modern and minimalistic look it gives a piece of furniture, plus black furniture tends to sell relatively quickly compared to others. I know when I start a new project, I jump online and search for furniture ideas to spark an idea. That’s why I am making this post!
Check out all the black painted furniture ideas below; you’ll see some of my work, some from my friends, and others great furniture artists.
Want your black furniture project listed? Email furnitureflippa@gmail.com or message me on Instagram including photos, the paint you used, how you painted it (application), your artist name/socials, along with a brief project description. I look forward to your emails!
1. Classic Black Nightstand
Paint Used: Behr “Totally Black” Premium Plus
Application: Brush
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This project was a simple black-painted furniture nightstand. I prepped the piece by cleaning it with mineral spirits and then sanded it lightly to ensure the paint would adhere as best as possible. I didn’t use a primer; I just started right with the black paint, as primer isn’t really required for dark paints.
I brushed it on, following the wood grain, and between coats, I used 320 grit to make sure the surface was super smooth. This helped give me a beautiful surface without any brush strokes.

2. Cane Chairs Extreme Black Makeover
Paint Used: “Coal Black” Fusion Mineral Paint
Application: Brush
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This is probably my favorite project I have ever completed because I actually kept it myself! Usually I flip to sell for a profit, these are still at my dining room table today. I painted these 4 solid wood chairs black, but I also completely redone the cane and the cushion fabric. My goal with this project was to make them look similar to a $2600 CB2 chair set, and I think for what I started with I got as close as I could.

3. Old TV Cabinet to Wine Bar
Paint Used: Behr “Totally Black” Premium Plus
Application: Wagner Flexio 590 Paint Sprayer
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This DIY project was a lot of fun and very unique compared to most projects I have completed. Someone in my neighborhood was giving this cabinet away for free so I sent him a message and said, “sure, I’ll grab it”. Little did I know I signed up to be a mover that day… I had to help the guy lift this up from his basement, around a tight corner, chipping away the painted walls, and all I could hear in my head was “PIVOT”.
I did more than just paint this black, I added a full new back wall, installed glass hangers, removed the doors, and added fresh refinished wine bottle rack/holders on the bottom.

4. Vintage Black Buffet Makeover
Paint Used: “Coal Black” Fusion Mineral Paint
Application: Brush
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This piece has a great combination of natural wood and black. This vintage buffet was a little blah and needed some modern touches to bring it back to life! I used my favorite black paint “Coal Black” by Fusion Mineral Paint in this project. I find this paint glides on so nicely with a brush making such a difference to the final piece!

5. Black Chest and Dresser Combo
Paint Used: “Coal Black” Fusion Mineral Paint
Application: Wagner Flexio 590 Paint Sprayer
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This was a project I quickly completed before moving out of my house in Halifax. The photos after were done quick so I the quality of them is mediocre. I actually had one of my viewers of my YouTube Channel come pick them up and sell them for me because I didn’t have enough time, I thought that was pretty cool!
I sprayed Coal Black Fusion Mineral paint on this piece and it sprayed so nicely. I also stained the drawers with Minwax Coffee Gel stain to match the black nicely.

6. Bernhardt Buffet Makeover
Paint Used: Valspar “Dark Kettle Black” Satin
Application: Graco Magnum X5 True Airless Sprayer
Artist: That Shabby Guy
I had to add this video directly to the list because it is one of the most viewed black-painted furniture pieces on YouTube! It has over 1,000,000 views, and for a good reason. If you want to see how to paint furniture like a pro then this is the video for you. That Shabby Guy is painting this for a client to match a table he did in the past; he ensures quality is the top priority.
7. Dresser and Nightstand Flip
Paint Used: Wise Owl One Hour Enamel in Jet Black and Clear
Application: Inokraft D1 LVLP
Artist: Sab’s Rehabs
This is a beautiful dresser and nightstand fully refinished with Jet Black Wise Owl paint and Varathane Stain in the color called “Kona”. This project was completed by my friend over at Sab’s Rehabs who does amazing work with all of her projects. This one came out so smooth and I had to share it on this list of black furniture ideas.

8. Wooden Filing Cabinet Gone Black
Paint Used: Sherwin Williams Infinity “Tricorn Black” Satin
Application: Graco Magnum X5 True Airless Sprayer
Artist: That Shabby Guy
Here is a wooden filing cabinet brought back to life by my friend That Shabby Guy! He sprayed on a beautiful black paint called “Tricorn Black” and stained the top of the cabinet with minwax ebony wood stain, which is almost a black stain. It compliments the black paint perfectly!

9. Kroehler Bedroom Set in Elegant Black
Paint Used: Behr Ultra Scuff Defense “Black” Satin
Application: Wagner Flexio 590 Paint Sprayer
Artist: Furniture Flippa
I had a lot of fun with this massive project! This solid wood Kroehler bedroom set was on the Facebook marketplace for $300 and I thought I could invest some time and money into them, to make them a little more up-to-date with black paint. After prepping them, I stain the top drawers and then go all black for the rest. I also chose silver gilding wax to bring the hardware back to life.
I chose a paint sprayer to apply the paint and also to apply the water-based poly. I love how it turned out and I think others did too after some great feedback on my YouTube comments.

10. Black Art Deco Chest of Drawers
Paint Used: Behr “Totally Black” Premium Plus
Application: Brush
Artist: Furniture Flippa
This is a project I completed back in 2020, but it comes to my mind regularly because it was one of my early flips that I was proud of. I tested my skills and used paint/varnish remover, then sanded, stained, and painted to get a beautiful-looking Art Deco vintage dresser/chest.

11. Vintage Wood Buffet
Paint Used: Clark+Kensington “Midnight Stroll” Satin
Application: Brush
Artist: That Shabby Guy
This is a nice wooden buffet painted with a black and almost grey paint. Instead of distressing the piece, That Shabby Guy used silver gilding wax on the detailed edges and also the hardware; this was to match the lighter black paint he used. He used a paintbrush for the full project, showing you that you don’t need all the latest tools to get a nice-looking painted finish.

Paint Used: “Coal Black” Fusion Mineral Paint
Application: Brush
Artist: Transcend Furniture Gallery
I remember when this video came out on YouTube and I thought it was such a beautiful piece of black furniture. It was turned into a statement piece, not only by the black paint but also by the new legs and base installed around the bottom of the piece. With some TLC and hard work, Transcend Furniture Gallery really created a piece of furniture art with this one! I had to have it on the list.
